Legionnaires

Why be a Legionnaire?

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

Our Legionnaires participate in many community activities such as parades, memorials, dedications, etc. We have a funeral honor guard detail ready, willing and able at the family’s request. Our funeral detail is available to all veterans. We sponsor local students to participate in Boy State, sponsor scholarships to better educate our children, sponsor local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops, and sponsor an North Mankato Legion Baseball team.

Legion Membership

If you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been  honorably discharged or are still serving -- you are eligible for membership in The American Legion.

  • Because eligibility dates remain open, all active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until dates of the end of hostilities as determine by the government of the United States.
  • U.S. Merchant Marine eligible only from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (WWII).

Scroll to the bottom of this page for a link to a membership form. Membership in American Legion Post 518 is $40 per year.

All membership cards expire December 31 of the year on the face of the card. The constitution of The American Legion sets the due date on October 20, each year, for the year “about to begin”. In order to give all the members time to meet this due date, with processing time built in to allow the posts to collect the dues, transmit them to the various state headquarters, and for the states to report the renewals to the national organization, the Legion has learned over many years to begin the renewal procedure at mid-year.

If a person renews in July, the card is good for the remainder of the current year and all of the following year. Each year afterwards, no matter when the renewal takes place, the person is simply extending the membership until the next December 31.
